LO1-5 Analysis of short films
Drama
Drink
Camerawork
The camerawork done in this film is really impressive. The camera angles used in this film are very well put together as they use many different angle to connote the scene and how to create moods in the film. The angles they have used are low angle to represent dominance this is used when they are in the bathroom and the big brother starts to abuse the other little brother. They do this through out the film to show that one person may be in more power than the other. They also use medium angles in some parts of the film when two of the actors are talking as it doesn't connote dominance but it connotes that both people are equal. It denotes this when they just get into the hotel and the owner is talking to the women about a place to stay also it happens when the kids have a talk next to the vending machine when they talk about their mother. The other angle they use is high angle. They use this when they are in the bathroom. This is done because the smaller child is scared and weak.
They also use different types of camera shots. For example they use close ups in the film to show emotion when someone is crying. The other shot they use is medium shot when two or more people are in the shot or if it wants more than the face showing in the scenes. The long shot at the start is to open the scene so then it established the area and introduces the mood. They also use over the shoulder shot for some of the scenes.
Another bit of camera work they do in this film is the movement of the camera. For example they use the movement to track the actor. For example they use a pan shot to follow a moving person or object. They also use tilt to introduce the actor or even just express the emotion. The other movement they use is tracking when they follow to actor and go the same direction.
Narrative
The story line for this film is very weird but a pretty good one as a I understand what it is all about. The main story is of a mother who has kidnaped her kids and needs a place to sleep. They decide to stay in a hotel however there is something wrong with the room and they realize something is going on as the water is dangerous. The kids she has are very argumentative and one forces the other to drink the water. This makes the older kid being in a bad situation. The room has a pass as a girl committed suicide with a unborn baby. If you drink the water what ever you hope that will happen will happen as she hoped to not have the kids. All together I would say it is a good story line.
Editing
The editing in this film is very good. The way they have cross cut in some of the scenes when people are talking. Each time that a conversation was a part of a scene they cut it to the person who was talking. This shows very good editing in the film as each cut is timed to perfection. This film has moment when the body fades away or goes in a dizzy effect. This was all done by editing. There is also a point when the sound is cancelled out or emphasised. This happens at the start of the film when they are in the car. Another bit of editing is the water and the kids mouth and hands. The waters colour would of been changed by premiere. This connotes that the water isn't safe to drink and something bad will happen to you if you do drink it.
Characterisation
Each character plays in a big role in the storyline of this film. The main character is a women who has two kids. I would say that she is a good actor to play this role in the film and she acted really well. The kids in the film acted very well for there age and I would say they played there role perfectly. They are a key part of the film as they are very important for her and for her partner. Her partner comes very late on in the film and he looks very rough. however I have a feeling that he has no money. but people are looking for I'm and her.
Visual Effects
At the start of film there is some of writing that appears onto the screen this was added in the video to introduce features and facts about the film. This was done by video editor. The other visual effect that they have done is changed the colour of the water to black which makes the water look like its poisoned. The other visual effect will be the boy with no hands and mouth. That was clearly done by green screen.
Documentary
Do You Smoke?
Camerawork
This film was all about how much money you could have if you didn't smoke. At the start of the film there is a man who ask another man if he smokes and how much he spends on smoking. The camera is always at a level angle as when the actors talk it switches over. This is to show that each character is equal and there opinions are all the same The camera angle is also high in some points when the man is asking the public for there opinion on the video. The shots they use are all medium close ups as you can still see there face and the expression in there face. At the start they use the medium close up to direct who is speaking in the film. This is so it grabs the audiences attention The other camera work they have used is zoom. This happens when they see the expression in there face as they are surprised that you can get better things with the amount of money you spend on smoking. The camerawork used in this short film is a little bit bad as the camera is not still when the other people are giving there view on the short film.
Narrative
This short film is all about smoking and how you could save so much money by not smoking or spend it on better things. The film clearly shows that we spend way to much money on smoking. However all the people had different views on the matter. For examples it denotes that one person said that if he like smoking he should but others said that he is killing himself then having a luxury item. In the end we find out that most people think that smoking is a waste of money. Some of the people find it funny as he questioned in back with the same question.
Editing
The only editing in this film really is the cutting in between each conversation. They use this to show who is talking at what point in the film. The cutting is done very well as it is timed to perfection and changes at the right point. In this short film there is no CGI because it is all just conversations.
Characterisation
I would say that they got the correct actors for the parts of the film. The first person is smart and well dressed as it represents that he doesn't smoke but the second actor doesn't really look like he has a healthy lifestyle because he smokes. The first actor ask all the question and comes up with the answers quickly. The second character come back with a good question as he has nothing to say about the matter. The random people they asked for the film all had a different point of view so it made the film more interesting as you want to know other peoples view n the film.
Visual Effects
There is only one visual effects on this film that is the writing at the end to introduce the film company and the people involved in this film. Also at the start of the film it introducers what the film is all about.
Comedy
The Heist
Camerawork
The camerawork used in this trailer is very good as they have many types of angles, shots and movement. The first angle I see is a level angle but a long shot. This establishes the area and opens the scene very well. The car is the key point of this scene as the actors are in the car. The second angle is a level angle again but a medium shot this may be done because it introduces the characters. As the characters start speaking it stays a medium shot but keeps to a level angle. This is so we know who the characters are. Through out the film we see that they use low angles and high angles. The low angles show dominance but also show the area very well and the high angles show weakness but you can see the warehouse in full depth. The shots they have are all different types depending on what's happening in the scene. If it is a close up it my be because they are trying the denote emotion and the expression in the actors face. The second shot they do is medium shots as it is a an easy shot so they can see what is happening in the scene and to use for bits with conversation in it. The movement in the film is very well done as they use different techniques. The first technique they use is pan shot so it follows the actor when they move. For example they do this when they are in the warehouse. The second technique they use is tracking shot. For example they follow the actor with the camera and go with his movement. The tilt technique is used in this film to establish the character or even the area.
Narrative
The main storyline is about two broke men about to commit a serious crime to become rich. They break into warehouse to find out there is no one in the ware house. This is the funny part of the film as they find out that they ended up at the wrong warehouse and realize that the only thing they can steal is rubber lizards. The best bit s that they realize that they messed up and they only have fake guns. The film is a comedy and it did make me laugh.
Editing
The editing in this film is really simple as there is no CGI in the film. The film only needed to be cut and to add a soundtrack over it. As the editing was really good and the cutting was well done so the film flowed together.
Characterisation
I would say that they got the correct actors to play this role. As they needed to act funny and bring comedy. They have the correct attitude to be able to be funny. The characters they have chose are funny. They say the correct things which is funny. There body posture is correct and the way they act is pretty good. The first bit of acting in the car is done very well as they are wearing the correct costume for the crime to be committed.
Visual Effects
The visual effects in this film is at the end as the writing goes up from the bottom this was done to show who made the film and who acted in this film.
Comedy
Is This Free
Camerawork
The camerawork in this short film is very impressive as thy used many types of angles to make the film flow. The types of angles they use ate high, low and level angle. The first angle they use is a level angle to open up the scene at the start. This establishes the surrounding and introduces the character. He firstly sees a girl then automatically talks about. Is this free at the point it is a low angle. The next angle they used is over the shoulder shot which is a high angle. This connotes that they are in conversation. Throughout the film they use many types of shots for example like medium shot when they are sat down to show the expression or close up to connote the emotion on someone's face. The other shot they use is medium close up this is for body shots so you can see the expression there body is making. They use a close up when he is talking to a girl called "Rosie" to emphasis the faces and when he picks up his phone. The confusion with everybody's face when he says something different is what they are trying to capture in the film. The movement of the camera is very important in the film as it will show what the actor is doing and behaving. When they are talking at the start the camera tracks the actors as they are walking. This connotes that he like the look of her. The movement of the camera when the actors are in a normal conversation connotes that the atmosphere is awkward at some points. Another movement shot they do is a panning shot as it establishes the area also follows the actors. The other movement I would like to talk about is zoom as they do it through out the film. They do this so it focuses on one main person or object.
Narrative
The main story line is very confusing however it is all about one guy tricking people to say things or asking them a question back. The main question is "Is this free?" This question was asked more than once in the film. This is what the whole film is about. The film is meant to be funny and I find it funny on the reaction the other people give to the man asking the question.
Editing
There is no CGI in this film. The film is all filmed in different café which makes it hard to make it flow. The film made sense. All they had to do was to add a soundtrack over some points however the cutting in the film is very well done.
Characterisation
The characters in this film had very good actors. As they new how to act and they could use there skills to act confused. The film includes one man character and he is the one who triggered the confusion in the conversation. He is dressed smartly as he acts very smart and has a lot of knowledge.
Visual Effects
The visual effects in this film is near the start when it has a weird pattern but it introduces what the film is called. This writing was in a pattern that would of been made in Photoshop.
Action
Retribution
Camerawork
So many camera angles are used in this film as it opens up with a high angle looking over a lot of the city. This establishes the location. The second camera angle is a medium close up on one of the guys faces. This introduces the character to the face. This is a level angle. They don't use a low angle only when they use tilt movement. In the first clip they use a long shot but it quickly switches to medium shot. This denotes someone breaking in to the area. This connotes that he is the bad guy. The close ups of his phone are made so then they can clearly see that he has message. The movement of the camera they use with in this film is very well done. For the first shot they use a pan shot across the city which opens the film up very well. The second movement is a tilt movement. I see that the speed of there walking was getting faster as the tracking shot was next to them. The camera work for this film is very impressive. Some moments I really like was when they have the fight and the angles and shots they got was done very well done.
Narrative
The storyline of this film is about one man on a mission for a file that is secret and confidential. However he got the file and now some people are after him. So he needs to run away but his friend has backstabbed him and he is in a big problem.
Editing
The editing in this film is vey well done as you can clearly hear that they have put a lot of effort in the soundtrack over the film. The other bit of editing they have done is cut the film up so it all flows and makes sense. With the film being cut so well I can clearly see what's happening in the storyline.
Characterisation
The characterisation had the correct actors for the film as they all looked the part however. Some of the FBI agents did not look the part for some of the shots until they started speaking. The costumes they where wearing did look like an agent and the spy did look like he was on a mission.
Visual Effects
At the start there is a logo and a introduction to the film what presents the film company. This is so viewers can see what company made the film. In the film there is a scene when two men are fighting and he stabs him in the back which reveals blood this is edited so the blood goes in most places. The other bit visual effects is the lens sight when he is aiming at the end also when he finally shoots they edited the shot so it looks like the bullet was actually shot.
